The purpose of this campaign is to raise money to help beautify and preserve the buildings on the historic Girard square.
No matter what age, if you are a native of Girard, Kansas, you are sure to have memories of the town square. "Seasoned" Girard residents tell stories of long ago when folks would gather every weekend around the square, catching a movie at the local theater, getting a 10 cent ice cream cone, and visiting with friends. Although many of the memories are of businesses long gone, several historic businesses still stand today! Many GHS graduates remember their trip to John's Jewelry to pick out their class ring and who hasn't dined at the historic East Side Cafe?
Downtown Girard is in need of a serious facelift and this is YOUR opportunity to be a part of History in the Making! The City of Girard has been awarded a grant to replace all of the sidewalks, street lights, benches and more. The Streetscape Project will provide a much needed cosmetic updates to the community. The project is scheduled to break ground later this year.
The funds raised in this campaign will be used to help fund a Facade Grant program put together through a joint effort of the City and Chamber of Commerce for building and business owners around the square. Some buildings are in need of a new coat of paint, while others need brickwork, awning repair and more.
As Girardians past and present, we are all in this together! No one can save our community alone, but together we can achieve BIG things!
